What is Early Treatment (Phase 1)?
Phase 1 treatment focuses primarily on correcting problems related to the jaw structure and ensuring there is enough room for all the permanent teeth. We use gentle, functional appliances—not always full braces—to achieve structural goals. The typical duration for Phase 1 is around 6 to 18 months, after which a resting period follows before Phase 2 (if needed) begins. Why Early Intervention Matters
Addressing problems early provides substantial benefits for your child:- Creates Space: It helps widen the jaw to accommodate permanent teeth, reducing the need for permanent tooth extractions later due to severe crowding.
- Corrects Jaw Problems: We can correct crossbites, underbites, and severe overbites by guiding the jaw as it grows, preventing the need for complex jaw surgery in adulthood.
- Protects Teeth from Trauma: Correcting severely protruding front teeth reduces the risk of accidental chips or breaks.
- Improves Confidence: Addressing noticeable issues at a younger age helps boost your child's self-esteem and social confidence.
Signs Your Child May Need an Evaluation
While we recommend all children be seen by age seven, you should schedule an appointment if you notice any of the following:- Early or late loss of baby teeth.
- Difficulty chewing or biting.
- Mouth breathing.
- Speech impediments.
- Protruding teeth (overbite).
- Front teeth not meeting (open bite).
- Crowded or misplaced permanent teeth.
